Set in the valley of the River Cerne and surrounded by glorious, unspoilt countryside is the attractive scattered community of Charminster. Served by a shop and pub, this village is also just one and a half miles from the bustling market town of Dorchester. Dorchester itself is packed with interesting features such as Roman roads, museums and a wide selection of pubs and restaurants. England’s largest hillfort, Maiden Castle, provides a scenic walk, whilst there is a County Museum with a room dedicated to locally born author, Thomas Hardy, writer of the recently televised ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles'. Seven miles away in picturesque Weymouth are glorious gently shelving beaches, though along the coastline visitors can also find the rugged peninsula of Portland and Chesil Beach – made famous by writer Ian McEwan.
