Glasgow is known as the ‘dear green place’ in Gaelic and was also considered the Second City of the Empire due to its industrial and shipbuilding power. The University of Glasgow is one of the world's oldest universities, dating back to 1451, and important names have worked or taught there including Adam Smith, Lord Kelvin and James Watt. Glasgow boasts a number of parks and gardens and a lively city centre with good shopping, theatres and many pubs and restaurants.
