With its two traditional pubs and restaurant, the village of Great Urswick is located just two miles to the south of Ulverston. Set on opposite sides of the same tarn, Great Urswick and Little Urswick are wonderful spots for wildlife enthusiasts, with a wide selection of water birds occupying its sheltered corner. Also close by is Birkrigg Stone Circle - one of several prehistoric settlement sites in the surrounding area. The Haematite and Cumbrian Way footpaths start close by, whilst the town of Ulverston offers a variety of good quality shops and tea-rooms as well as a street market every Thursday and Saturday. In addition, the town is home to both a cinema and leisure centre, and is within easy reach of the Lake District National Park. The area also boasts numerous sandy beaches as well as good bird watching opportunities. Lakes Windermere and Coniston are within easy reach, as is the Lakeside Steam Railway, the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Muncaster Castle and the Aquarium of the Lakes.
